Samsung will drop the price of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge in a bid to revive its flagging smartphone sales. The announcement comes in the company's latest earnings report, which makes for grim reading for the South Korean firm.
Samsung's Q2 sales are down from 52.4 trillion Korean won in 2014 to 48.6 trillion this year. Part of that year-on-year fall is down to declining smartphone sales, with Samsung blaming " supply difficulties from higher than expected market demand for the Galaxy S6 Edge, as well as increased marketing expenditures that typically accompany flagship product launches" for slimmer than expected profits.

There's good news for consumers, though, as Samsung is preparing for a price war to boost sales. "Whi le the IT & Mobile Communications (IM) Division is expected to face a difficult business environment, the sales momentum for high-end products will be maintained by adjusting the price of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge," Samsung's earning statement reports. That can only mean a price cut for the flagship phone models, which are among the most expensive handsets currently on the market.
The firm say it will also be "launching a new model with a larger screen" later this year, which will almost certainly be the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus that was leaked earlier this month.
Like Apple, Samsung is also feeling the pinch in tablets, as supersized smartphones - such as the Samsung Galaxy Note range - continue to eat into sales. The company says its tablets will go into "negative growth" (corporate speak for "decline") in the second half this year, although Samsung will " actively respond to market demands with the Galaxy Tab A series and a new product scheduled for later this year".
