Sony makes some rather excellent Android phones with, shall we say, “optimistic pricing”. It’s not that they’re overpriced, but like HTC the company tends to come close to Samsung and Apple prices without the same marketing budget. On Black Friday, that all changes though, and Sony has slashed prices on a number of its best handsets. Cream of the crop is this deal on the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact at Giffgaff . For £299, you get a phone that’s packing the latest Snapdragon 845 processor as the full-sized version and pretty much every other flagship Android device out there. That makes it something of a steal, considering the OnePlus 6T is our regular Snapdragon 845 value option at £499. Better still it comes with a pair of Sony WF-1000x noise-cancelling wireless headphones which retail for £180 apparently. There is one tiny caveat here: it does require you to buy a Giffgaff SIM at the same time if you don’t have one. The cheapest of these is £10, and can be cancelled immediately so you’re looking at a total of £309. Still a steal for a phone with an RRP of £529. If the Compact is too small for you (and it’s worth remembering that at 5in, it’s only slightly smaller than the original Galaxy Note), there are other options available. The larger 5.7in Xperia XZ2 is available for £449 at Amazon , for starters. This has the same internals – Snapdragon 845 included – but a higher resolution to make up for the bigger screen. Both, sadly, have ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack. If you want that, you’ll have to drop a generation, and the still pretty powerful Xperia XZ1 is also reduced and can be had for just £219 . Finally, there’s the 6in XA2 Ultra at £199, down from £379 at Giffgaff . It’s a midranger we liked a great deal when we reviewed it earlier this year. As Ed said at the time: “There’s little you can fault with the XA2 Ultra. It’s great to look at; the rear camera produces excellent-quality stills and video, and it’s got a really solid battery life. When it comes to your next smartphone upgrade, those are three of the most important boxes ticked, especially for a mid-range handset, where you can’t necessarily have everything.” These are solid deals all round. My pick remains the XZ2 Compact with the free headphones, but your mileage may vary. Buy it now from Giffgaff
